DMCA Copyright Policy
Last Updated: June 9, 2026
1. Copyright Policy Overview
Meme Explorer respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects our users to do the same. We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") and other applicable intellectual property laws.
This policy describes the information that should be included in notices of alleged copyright infringement and our procedure for responding to such notices.
2. Content Sourcing & Attribution
All memes displayed on Meme Explorer are sourced from Reddit's public API. We provide proper attribution for all content, including:
- Original poster's Reddit username
- Subreddit of origin
- Direct link to the original Reddit post
- Timestamp of original posting
Important: We do not host user-generated content ourselves. All content is linked from Reddit. We are not affiliated with Reddit, Inc.
3. Reporting Copyright Infringement
3.1 How to File a DMCA Notice
If you believe that your copyrighted work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement and is accessible on Meme Explorer, please notify our Copyright Agent as set forth in the DMCA.
Your DMCA notice must include the following information:
Required Information:
- Physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed, or, if multiple copyrighted works are covered by a single notification, a representative list of such works
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit us to locate the material (please provide the specific URL(s) of the meme page(s))
- Your contact information including your address, telephone number, and email address
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed

Note: Under Section 512(f) of the DMCA, any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material or activity is infringing may be subject to liability. Please ensure your claim is valid before submitting.
5. Our Response to DMCA Notices
5.1 Review Process
Upon receiving a valid DMCA notice, we will:
- Review the notice to ensure it meets DMCA requirements (typically within 24-48 hours)
- Remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing material if the notice is valid
- Make a good faith attempt to contact the original poster (if applicable)
- Document the takedown in accordance with DMCA requirements
5.2 Content Removal
When we remove or disable access to content in response to a DMCA notice:
- The specific meme/content will be removed from Meme Explorer
- We may cache the original URL to prevent re-aggregation
- Attribution information may be retained for record-keeping purposes
6. Counter-Notification
6.1 If You Believe Content Was Wrongly Removed
If you believe that your content that was removed (or to which access was disabled) is not infringing, or that you have authorization from the copyright owner to post and use the content, you may send a counter-notification to our Copyright Agent.
6.2 Counter-Notification Requirements
Your counter-notification must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature
- Identification of the content that has been removed or to which access has been disabled and the location at which the content appeared before it was removed or disabled
- A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief that the content was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification
- Your name, address, telephone number, and email address
- A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which your address is located (or if you are outside the United States, for any judicial district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who provided the original DMCA notification or an agent of such person
6.3 Counter-Notification Process
Send your counter-notification to our Copyright Agent at dmca@meme-explorer.com.
Upon receiving a valid counter-notification, we will forward it to the original complainant. The complainant then has 10 business days to file a court action seeking an order to restrain you from engaging in infringing activity. If we do not receive notice that such an action has been filed, we may restore the removed content.
7. Repeat Infringer Policy
In accordance with the DMCA and other applicable laws, Meme Explorer has adopted a policy of terminating, in appropriate circumstances, users who are deemed to be repeat infringers. We may also, at our sole discretion, limit access to the site and/or terminate accounts of any users who infringe any intellectual property rights of others, whether or not there is any repeat infringement.
8. Fair Use Consideration
Meme Explorer recognizes that memes often constitute transformative use and may fall under fair use provisions of copyright law. We consider fair use factors including:
- The purpose and character of the use (memes are typically transformative)
- The nature of the copyrighted work
- The amount used in relation to the whole
- The effect on the market for the original work
However, fair use determinations are made on a case-by-case basis, and we defer to copyright holders' legitimate concerns.
9. Reddit Content Considerations
Since all our content comes from Reddit:
- Original Source: Content may have been posted to Reddit by someone other than the copyright holder
- Reddit's Responsibility: Copyright holders may also need to submit DMCA notices directly to Reddit
- Double Attribution: Removing content from Meme Explorer does not remove it from Reddit
- Upstream Removal: If Reddit removes content, it will automatically disappear from Meme Explorer on our next refresh cycle
10. Voluntary Content Removal
If you are a copyright holder and would prefer to request removal without filing a formal DMCA notice, you may contact us at legal@meme-explorer.com. We will review your request and may voluntarily remove content at our discretion.
Note: Voluntary removal requests do not provide the same legal protections as formal DMCA notices.
11. Prevention & Proactive Measures
Meme Explorer takes proactive steps to respect copyright:
- Source Attribution: We always link to and credit the original Reddit post
- Quality Filtering: We filter out low-quality or potentially problematic content
- Subreddit Selection: We curate reputable subreddits known for original content
- Responsive Removal: We respond quickly to valid takedown requests
- No Re-Upload: We don't allow users to upload content; everything comes from Reddit's API
12. International Copyright
We respect international copyright laws and will respond to notices that comply with applicable international treaties and agreements, including:
- Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works
- WIPO Copyright Treaty
- EU Copyright Directive (where applicable)
13. Trademark Concerns
This DMCA policy primarily addresses copyright. For trademark concerns, please contact us at legal@meme-explorer.com with:
- Proof of trademark ownership or authorization
- Identification of the allegedly infringing use
- Explanation of how the use causes confusion or dilution
14. Transparency Report
We believe in transparency. We may publish an annual transparency report that includes:
- Number of DMCA notices received
- Number of counter-notifications received
- Number of items removed
- Number of accounts terminated
Our first transparency report will be published in Q1 2027.
15. Changes to This Policy
We may update this DMCA Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Material changes may be communicated via email or site notification.
